Another Question...

Missy- Yesterday in our CSA Management Issues in Student Affairs class, we talked about collaborations between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs. Since I know you, I know that this is an area of great strength for you. (I think about the example of building a "Common Reading" program and how you were able to do that with faculty (and staff) at SMU.) Can you offer any "words of wisdom" to the students on developing and cultivating relationships with faculty?  Thanks- sorry to add another question but it occurs to me that you probably have alot to offer on this subject. ...Dee Siscoe

  1. I really do LOVE working with Academic Affairs! The most important thing to do in working with faculty is to make sure that they feel like you are supporting them in their work...not vice-versa. Faculty are very willing to be involved in projects/programs that they see as beneficial to the work they do so figure out how your idea(s) can assist them.

Secondly...listen and be seen. Know what the topics are with the faculty. If you are permitted, attend faculty meetings. At Ursinus I attend every faculty meeting and many faculty research presentations.

To build relationships with faculty - remember that they are people too. Invite a faculty member to coffee or lunch...they will be all over it. At SMU and Ursinus I became running buddies with several faculty members. Find a connection.

  2. Missy, that is great that you work so well academic affairs and have been able to bridge the gap between academic and student affairs. I was wondering have you worked closely at all with athletics? If so, what was your experience and what successful ways have you seen athletics connect with both academic and student affairs? There seems to be a disconnect in some Universities and I think it is important for student athletes to be involved on campus, and to do well academically.

  3. Ashley,

I worked with Athletics a lot during my time at SMU and again at Ursinus. I think the same principles apply -- listen and be seen. Be an advocate for student athletes and you will garner the respect of athletic administration.
